| My goal as Supervisor of Officials is to afford all officials, at every level, the opportunity to experience consistent, quality training and development in basketball officiating techniques and strategies. - John A Eckstrom - See Rules and Case Play Situations. | Officiating Philosophy: Each official should have a definite and clear conception of his/her over-all responsibility. If all possessed the same conception, then there would be the greatest uniformity in administration. The essence of Oswald Tower's utterance, upon which the basic philosophy of the whole officiating structure should be built is, "It is the purpose of the rules to penalize a player who by reason of an illegal act has placed his opponent at a disadvantage." |

| What Makes Good Mechanics?: Good mechanics are the difference between a well officiated basketball game by a team of officials and officials working as individuals and doing their thing, regardless of the consequences. Whether you are officiating as a two-man crew or working as a three-man team the sum total result is the same. A team of officials provides for good teamwork, total court coverage and communication between all officials. The opposite is true when officials work as individuals. |
| Food For Thought: There used to be a philosophy that talking to coaches was dangerous and that you shouldn't try it. Coaches were supposed to talk to their players, and refs were supposed to talk to the table people, and never the twain should meet. That "common knowledge" is no longer common; that is, it is not universally accepted. Most refs find a certain amount of verbal interaction with coaches is helpful. It can still be treacherous, but, properly handled, it can make the difference between a good game and a mess. This doesn't mean that unlimited conversation with a coach is the goal. The key to good talking is to craft neutral, informative phrases and to use them at just the right time. If you continue to hone, practice, evaluate, weigh, observe, and practice some more, you'll get to the point where you can feel comfortable that the things you say are assertive, constructive, and positive. If a coach does go postal, you won’t need to worry that you might have prevented the explosion if you'd only handled things differently. |
